GLASS BRUSH – MARCO MENCACCI
2025, December 4th - 2026, January 10th
With GLASS BRUSH, Marco Mencacci pushes Murano glass to its most expressive limits. Working with the sommerso technique, where layers of colored glass are successively immersed in transparencies of varying densities, he seeks to capture within the material an impulse, a vibration, an inner movement. Each blown form is then cold-cut, faceted, and polished with great precision. These interventions carve out new volumes and new pathways for light. Once smoothed, the surfaces regain the brilliance of glass while revealing an intimate architecture in which colors and transparencies appear to float in suspension. Each piece is unique, the result of a patient process of research combining drawings, collages, sketches, and models.
For this series, Marco Mencacci’s visual imagination draws from pictorial references that have accompanied his gaze since childhood: Italian Renaissance painting, with Pontormo’s vibrant, mannerist draperies and his acidic, pulsating colors; the luminous Annunciations of Fra Angelico ; and the armored busts of Artemisia Gentileschi’s heroines, bathed in light. These sources are joined by the lyrical abstraction of Hans Hartung, the geometric radicality of Rodchenko, and the futuristic cities with daring geometric compositions found in Antonio Sant’Elia’s drawings. These influences do not turn glass into painting ; they infuse it with dynamism, energy, and inner tension.
As in his earlier creations presented in BLOW CUT and FLOW CUT, each GLASS BRUSH piece is sculpted like a pure crystal. But the singularity of this new collection lies in the creation of a veritable “people” of glass : a constellation of objects in which each form carries the memory of a pictorial evocation that has shaped the artist’s imagination. At the crossroads of sculpture, design, and architectural space,GLASS BRUSH extends the dialogue that Marco Mencacci has pursued for forty years between color, form, and sign, between rigor and sensibility. Here, glass becomes a place : a space where light unfolds, where color breathes, and where movement remains suspended.
