Make no mistake, Jean-Daniel Bouvard’s painting is happy, happy, warm. But on closer inspection, he manages to move us by the melancholy of these views of the South, at the bend of a secular wall, a dike immersed, an erected fortress that they will never face the horizon. While the viewer, he has all the time to glimpse, and most often to imagine the sea, the light, the view available to him, to feel the presence, to measure the ladder. Jean-Daniel Bouvard is indeed an architect of beautiful breakaways.
