Born in 1944 in Chauny, in the Aisne region of France, Jacques-Victor André comes from a long lineage of stonecutters dating back to the 17th century. Trained at the Académie Charpentier, La Grande Chaumière, and the École des Métiers d'Art in Paris (now ENSAAMA Olivier de Serre), he chose early on to distance himself from the family tradition in order to develop a personal sculptural language at the crossroads of sculpture and architecture. He has lived and worked in Picardy since 1971, where he established his studio, while also pursuing an extensive teaching career at ENSAAMA and at the Paris-Val de Seine School of Architecture.
A sculptor of voids and passages, Jacques-Victor André works with stone, granite, concrete, steel, bronze, and light, engaging in a constant dialogue with space and the viewer. Grottos, doors, trees, and fragmented architectural forms structure an oeuvre that explores notions of shelter, thresholds, and transition. Both intimate and monumental, his sculptures invite physical and mental wandering, where mineral forms evolve into vegetal presences and shadow becomes a material in its own right. Actively involved in public commissions since the 1970s, he frequently collaborates with architects, creating works integrated into urban and architectural environments across France and Europe. Deeply informed by nature, light, and a poetic reflection on dwelling, his work conveys a quiet yet vital sense of monumentality, marked by clarity and balance.
