Lucas Weinachter is a French artist, born on December 27, 1959, in Lorraine, to an architect father. In 1980, he entered the School of Fine Arts, initially studying architecture until 1982. He then pursued a program in the visual arts department at the same school, taking painting classes in Vladimir Velickovic’s studio until 1984, with a required focus on the study of anatomy.
For Lucas Weinachter, drawing is the tool through which he questions the world and takes hold of it with an austerity and expressive intensity that never yields to seduction. His universe is as enigmatic as it is intriguing, as strange as it is mesmerizing. It is a poetic world steeped in melancholy, a feeling he describes as follows: “I like the definition of melancholy in ancient thought: it referred to a state that made it possible to live, to transcend oneself, to search for meaning in one’s life. This is what we all do.”
His complete mastery of technique is directed toward a dialogue with reality— a reality whose mystery he seeks to penetrate. His work therefore focuses on subjects such as portraits, anatomy, landscapes, plant life, architecture, as well as themes of childhood and vanitas.
